Top 10 Management Tips
Top Ten Management Tips:
- Listen Better. The first of the management tips is listening — the most underrated and underused skill in business (or in life). If you make a conscious effort to improve your listening skills, you will have advanced your leadership ability considerably.
- Set Clear Expectations. One of the key management tips is painting a clear and compelling picture for your people of where you want them to go, and what you want them to do.
- Hold People Accountable. Once you’ve told people what you want from them, you need to hold them to account for those expectations. Holding people accountable is a critical leadership skill.
- Offer Constant Feedback. Offering regular and quality feedback is the easiest of the management tips to understand, and one of the hardest to do well.
- Use Positive Reinforcement. Nothing will accelerate great performance better or faster than the appropriate use of positive reinforcement.
- Address Difficult Issues Promptly. Failure to address difficult issues will cause performance to suffer not only from the individual, but from the rest of your team as well. Of all the management tips, this is the one that many avoid the most.
- Meet One on One With Your People Regularly. Regular one on one meetings are the most overlooked of the management tips. Quality and consistent one on one meetings save leaders time and energy by providing a forum to reinforce expectations and to offer feedback on progress.
- Communicate Constantly. Managers with the best leadership skills are very simply those who communicate the most. Both quality and quantity of communication efforts are important.
- Do What You Say You Will. This is the only way to create trust amongst your people, your peers, your boss and the organization. This is the most fundamental of the management tips.
- Make More Mistakes. (What?!?!) It is important to make mistakes otherwise you are not taking enough risks. The important thing is to not repeat mistakes, and be humble and honest about your mistakes with everyone.
